📱 Foreigners' Mobile Phone Subscription Guide: From Requirements to Plan Changes
2026-10-16
Foreigners can also sign up for mobile phone service in Korea under their own name.
However, the available services and application methods will differ depending on the ID, payment method, and the phone you will use.
Let's check what you need to prepare before signing up and what to do if you get stuck during the application.

🧠Terms to know before signing up for a mobile phone

Let’s go over some terms that often appear on the application screen.
Term | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
Prepaid | You pay or charge first, then use the service. | Check not only the top-up amount, but also the usage period of allowances and how to top up again. |
Postpaid | You pay for your usage on a set payment date. | Prepare a payment method, such as account or card, that you’ll use when signing up. |
USIM | You use a physical SIM card in your phone for service. | Check if it can be used in your phone. |
eSIM | You download communication info instead of a physical chip. | Check if your exact phone model supports it. |
MVNO | A company that provides service by renting the network from a major carrier. | Request rate plan changes or cancellations to the MVNO you actually signed up with. |
Contract | A contract that gives discounts etc. under the condition of using the service for a set period. | Check if you have to pay any costs for early termination or changing terms. |
There may be a contract even for SIM-only sign-ups.
'Device installment' for phone payment and 'contract' for service discount are separate things.
Even if you use your own phone, check if the plan has a contract.

💳 How to choose the right rate plan for you

When picking a plan, first consider your recent data usage and how long you'll use it in Korea.
The ideal plan depends on whether you mainly use Wi-Fi at home or school, watch videos often outside, or connect your laptop to your phone.
Items to compare | Details to check |
|---|---|
Data | Amount provided monthly, speed/extra charges after it runs out |
Tethering | Separate limit for data sharing with a laptop etc. |
Calls | Domestic minutes provided, separate charges for international or video calls |
Actual monthly cost | Price after discounts end, conditions for card use/bundling etc. |
Initial payment | Separate fees for SIM issuance, delivery, etc. |
Usage period | Contract status/end date, return conditions for early cancellation |
With 'unlimited', speed may be reduced after you use up the basic data.
GB is the amount of data, Mbps is the speed at which data is transferred.
If the product description says 'up to â—‹Mbps after basic allowance', it means use is limited to that speed after you use up your basic data.
Even with unlimited mobile data, tethering may have a separate limit.
Also compare your return date and the discount end date.
Don't just look at the initial monthly charge; check the total you’ll pay over the period you’ll use it.
When consulting, say: "I already have a phone. Please tell me the monthly fee excluding device cost, the discount period, and contract conditions."

🪪 What you need to prepare to sign up as a foreigner

For standard sign-ups, ID verification, payment, and whether the phone can be used are checked.
Prepare the list below, but follow the requirements of your chosen application path for actual document submission.
Category | Item to prepare | Purpose/Notes |
|---|---|---|
ID | Usually your own Alien Registration Card | Services that allow sign-up with a passport use a separate process. |
Payment method | Account/card info etc. for postpaid sign-up | Confirm the method is in your name and is an accepted form of payment. |
Application info | Required form fields: name, ID info, contact number, etc. | Input info to match the ID. You’ll also need a shipping address for delivery. |
Phone to use | Exact model, check USIM/eSIM support | For phones purchased overseas, also check if it is carrier-locked. |
Additional documents | Docs as separately requested in your application process | Not all foreigners are required to submit admission letters, student certificates, etc. |
If you don't have an Alien Registration Card yet
Prepaid services allowing sign-up with a passport may be an option.
Before signing up, check the allowed usage period and procedures for updating info or extending service after you get your registration card.
Even if you receive the card, remember your info at the carrier won't be updated automatically.
If you don't have a Korean bank account yet
Look for prepaid services that allow cash top-up or sign-up routes that accept cards.
However, check separately in your sign-up process if foreign-issued cards are accepted.
If you are using a phone brought from overseas
Check if it is locked to prevent using SIMs from other carriers.
If it is locked, you must ask your original overseas carrier to unlock it.
For eSIM, support can vary by model and country of sale even within the same product line.
When required, prepare the phone's IMEI and the eSIM's EID, and secure Wi-Fi for installation.
