✈️ Visa checklist before studying abroad student leaves for vacation
2026-06-15
You bought a ticket to visit your home country for your first summer vacation, but are you worried and unsure if you can safely return to Korea? 🤔
Especially for students studying with D-2 or D-4 visas, you must carefully check your visa expiration date and foreigner registration card status.
We have prepared a must-have checklist to help you leave and return safely and comfortably! ✨
🗓️ 4 weeks before departure: Check visa expiration and extension
Are you anxious because you are confused about your stay validity date? Make sure to check the dates on Hi Korea!

Check your foreigner registration card stay validity date on Hi Korea
Extension applications are possible from 4 months before the expiration date until the day of expiration
Applying after expiration may result in a penalty, so be careful
👉 You’ll feel at ease if you apply for an extension with plenty of time!
🛂 2 weeks before departure: Re-entry permit and registration card check
You may worry if you need a separate re-entry permit or if you are exempt. If you prepare in advance, you have nothing to worry about!

According to regulations reinstated on April 1, 2022, you are exempt from the re-entry permit if you re-enter within one year from the departure date
If your remaining stay period is less than one year, re-enter by the stay expiration date
From January 1, 2025, the foreigner registration card reissue fee is raised to 35,000 won, so reissue in advance if lost
👉 As long as you check your stay period, you can travel without worries!
🚫 If you need to postpone departure
You’ve already made your travel plans, but are you anxious about possible document issues? In such cases, please wait a little!

If you haven’t received your foreigner registration card yet, avoid leaving the country
If you leave Korea while your stay period extension or status change is under review, it could cause visa issues
If you depart before your registration is approved, your visa may be automatically canceled (refer to Korea University GSC guidance)
👉 It’s safest to depart only after all permissions are complete!
✈️ On the day of departure: Essentials to pack
Finally, it’s departure day! Isn’t your heart pounding on the way to the airport, wondering if you forgot anything? Let’s open your bag for a final check!

Make sure to carry your passport and physical foreigner registration card
Double check that the name on your ticket matches your English passport name
Confirm once more that your re-entry date is before your stay expiration date
Keep your registration card in your carry-on, not checked baggage
👉 Just follow this checklist and you’ll have no problem adjusting to life in Korea!
Closing
✔️ First, always check your foreigner registration card’s stay validity on Hi Korea and apply for an extension if needed.
✔️ Check if you can re-enter within one year or before expiration according to the exemption regulation after April 1, 2022.
✔️ If you are under visa extension/change review or have not received your foreigner registration card yet, please postpone your departure.
We hope you spend a warm and happy time with your beloved family back home during the break! ✈️✨
